Solid brick and flint walls holding moisture
Many of Forest Row's older cottages near the High Street and church were built with solid brick or flint walls and lime mortar rather than cavity construction. Once water gets in from a burst pipe or roof leak, there is no cavity to intercept it, so moisture tracks through the masonry and lingers in the wall structure. These walls dry far more slowly than modern cavity walls and need careful, monitored drying to avoid damaging old plaster and internal finishes.
