Common causes of mould in Oakwood homes
Cold bay windows and original steel frames
Many Oakwood semis still have their 1930s bay windows, and some retain original or poorly upgraded steel-framed units. These create a cold bridge that chills the surrounding wall and reveal, so warm moist air condenses there first. The result is recurring black mould around window frames and on the wall behind curtains, often dismissed as a cleaning issue when the real cause is heat loss at the frame itself.
Flat-roofed rear extensions
A large number of Oakwood's semis have had kitchen or bathroom extensions added with flat felt or GRP roofs, typical of extensions built from the 1960s onward. These roofs are prone to slow penetrating leaks at upstands and junctions with the original brickwork. Water tracks along ceiling joists before it shows, so mould often appears on the extension ceiling or top of the adjoining wall well after the leak began.
Loft conversions with restricted ventilation
Oakwood's shallow interwar roof spaces have frequently been converted into an extra bedroom or ensuite bathroom, squeezing plumbing and shower units into the eaves with limited airflow. Combined with the sloped ceilings typical of these conversions, moist air struggles to circulate and condenses against the cooler roof slope. Mould then develops in the loft ensuite and along the low eaves walls, often out of sight until it has spread.
