Common causes of mould in Brixton homes
Converted Victorian terraces with poor ventilation
Many Brixton terraces around Herne Hill and Tulse Hill were split into flats decades ago, often without extractor fans fitted to bathrooms or kitchens. Solid brick walls have no cavity to buffer moisture, so warm, humid air condenses on cold plaster, skirting and window reveals. Black mould develops behind wardrobes and in corners where airflow is weakest, returning quickly unless ventilation is properly addressed.
System-built council flats and cold bridging
Estates near Angell Town and Coldharbour Lane include concrete-panel and system-built blocks where thermal bridging at window frames, lintels and external corners creates persistently cold surfaces. Even with normal household humidity, these cold spots attract condensation and black mould around window reveals and on north-facing external walls, particularly in bedrooms, unless the underlying cold bridging and insulation gaps are fixed.
Basement and lower ground floor conversions
