Damp, mould & leak services in Redbourn
Redbourn's housing stock runs from timber-framed and brick cottages around Church End and the High Street, some with thatch, through Victorian terraces built as the village grew, to 1930s semis and later estates towards Harpenden Road. Solid walls, shallow or absent damp-proof courses and ageing thatch mean moisture problems are common across the village's older core.

Common damp problems in Redbourn homes
Rising damp in Church End's period cottages
Many of Redbourn's oldest cottages around Church End and the High Street were built with solid brick or flint walls and no damp-proof course, sitting directly on clay subsoil. Groundwater wicks upward through the masonry, leaving tide-marked plaster, crumbling lime render and musty skirting boards, especially where modern cement renders have replaced breathable lime finishes and trapped moisture inside the wall.
Thatch and roof timber decay
A number of Redbourn's cottages retain thatched or aged tiled roofs with shallow pitches and original timber rafters. Where thatch has thinned or flashing around chimneys has failed, water tracks into the roof space unnoticed, rotting purlins and soaking loft insulation. This penetrating damp often surfaces as ceiling staining and black mould in upstairs bedrooms long before residents suspect the roof.
Condensation mould in postwar estate homes
Around the newer estates off Harpenden Road and Kinsbourne Green, 1930s to 1970s semis and terraces built with cavity walls and small original windows now suffer from poor ventilation once double glazing and loft insulation were retrofitted. Bathrooms and north-facing bedrooms regularly show black spot mould on cold walls and wardrobe backs, driven by trapped humidity rather than any structural leak.

I recently used a damp and mould specialist company and was extremely impressed with the service from start to finish. From the initial survey, they were knowledgeable, thorough, and took the time to clearly explain the cause of the issue rather than just treating the symptoms.
