Common damp problems in Nunhead homes
Rising damp in solid-wall Victorian terraces
Many Nunhead terraces off Evelina Road and Ivydale Road were built with little or no functioning damp-proof course, and decades of raised garden levels and cement render have since bridged what DPC exists. Ground floor rooms and converted lower-ground flats commonly show tide-marked plaster, crumbling skirting and salt staining, worsened by the clay subsoil that holds water against foundations after heavy rain.
Flat roof and loft conversion leaks
Loft extensions are widespread across Nunhead's terraced streets, giving extra bedrooms but often built with ageing felt flat roofs over dormers and rear additions.
